Sage went back to the drawing board to create the incredible new Z-Axis Series Fast Action Rods. By improving the entire rod-building process, sage created a rod that’s significantly lighter, stronger and easier to cast for anglers of all skill levels. The Z-Axis offers an entirely new level of fishability with unprecedented line feel, response and performance. Shop Review: The Z-Axis replaced Sage’s ever popular XP. The XP set the bar for fast action fly rods and many wondered why Sage would discontinue such a great rod. Well, after fishing the new Z-Axis it becomes clear that Sage really has improved upon the XP. The Z-Axis is every bit as stiff and as fast as the XP, but it is lighter and has a softer tip section. Softening up the tip section improves the fishability of the rod by making it easier to load at shorter distances and more responsive when mending and roll casting. The Z-Axis is a great all around high performance fly rod. It excels when fishing heavy flies or casting big dries in windy conditions. The Z-Axis is our rod of choice when fishing streamers from the boat for big browns on the Yellowstone. The Z-Axis matches up really well with Scientific Angler’s GPX fly line and Rio’s Rio Grand fly line. Both lines are slightly heavier to better load fast action rods.
